Mini-ADHD and Executive Functioning Assessment
Not ready for the extensive ADHD testing?
Want to know whether you might have ADHD before you commit?
Mini-ADHD assessments are the first step to see if you have enough symptoms of ADHD before committing to the extensive tests. Held virtually for all residents of California.
Do I actually have ADHD?
COMMON PROBLEM:
Some folks have worried that they have ADHD, but they aren’t sure. Perhaps they are distracted, but they don’t know why. Is it anxiety? Is it trauma? Is it actually ADHD?
TRUTH:
We can do a mini-assessment to see if you have enough symptoms of ADHD to suspect that you would be diagnosed with ADHD. This provides a cost-effective way to answer your diagnostic question before making a larger financial commitment.
ADHD is frustrating.
Undiagnosed ADHD canhold you back, leading to poor self-esteem, low work performance, unending procrastination, and frustration over the perceived inability to do it all like everyone else. A diagnosis matters because it can help you advocate for yourself and provide you with real-life skills to stay focused and calm.
Your ADHD might lead to:
Low self-esteem about your intelligence or ability in school or work.
Falling behind on work tasks and having a hard time following a to-do list.
Distraction and inability to stay on task for more extended periods of time followed by feelings of overwhelm with how much time you’ve lost.
Fear of timelines for school or work projects and struggling to keep up with assignments, tests, and scheduling demands.
Difficulty articulating your needs verbally with others.
Disconnected relationships because you are distracted and anxious most of the time.
Feedback from your peers, teachers, or colleagues that you have difficulty staying on task and following through with assignments.
Frustration with your own lack of focus.
Needing extra time with assignments and tests in order to perform at your best.

Who is a good fit for a Mini-ADHD evaluation?
A "mini" ADHD evaluation might be a good fit if you have a strong suspicion of ADHD based on a clear history of symptoms, but need a quick confirmation to guide initial treatment decisions. This streamlined assessment focuses on core ADHD symptoms and may be suitable for individuals with relatively straightforward presentations and minimal co-occurring conditions. While comprehensive evaluations offer a deeper dive and are recommended for complex cases, research suggests that focused assessments can be effective for initial screening and diagnosis in certain populations (Adler et al., 2006). A mini evaluation can provide a cost-effective and time-efficient way to start addressing potential ADHD symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Mini ADHD Assessment
Quick answers before you book your free consultation
What is a Mini ADHD Assessment?
1
A Mini ADHD Assessment is a streamlined, virtual evaluation designed to determine whether your symptoms are consistent with ADHD — before committing to a full comprehensive evaluation. It includes a free 15-minute consultation, a shortened clinical interview, targeted ADHD symptom measures administered online, and a brief written report with results and recommended next steps. It is a cost-effective first step for people who strongly suspect ADHD but want confirmation before pursuing a longer, more involved evaluation.
How is a Mini ADHD Assessment different from a full ADHD evaluation?
2
A full ADHD evaluation includes an extensive clinical interview, multiple standardized testing batteries, differential diagnosis across conditions like anxiety, depression, learning disorders, and autism, and a comprehensive written report suitable for school accommodations, workplace accommodations, and standardized testing boards (SAT, GRE, Bar Exam, etc.).
A Mini ADHD Assessment is shorter, less expensive, and focused specifically on whether core ADHD symptoms are present. It is best suited for adults or teens with a relatively clear and straightforward symptom history who want a clinical opinion before deciding on next steps. It does not produce documentation sufficient for formal accommodations — for that, a full evaluation is required.
Who is a good candidate for a Mini ADHD Assessment?
3
A Mini ADHD Assessment is a good fit if you have a strong personal history of ADHD-like symptoms — such as chronic difficulty with focus, follow-through, procrastination, or organization — and want a professional clinical opinion before pursuing full testing. It works best for people with relatively straightforward presentations and few or no known co-occurring conditions. If your history is more complex (for example, if you also have significant anxiety, depression, trauma, or suspect autism), a full comprehensive evaluation is likely the better starting point, as it captures the full picture more accurately.
Is the Mini ADHD Assessment available virtually?
4
Yes. The Mini ADHD Assessment is conducted entirely online and is available to all California residents. You do not need to come into our Santa Monica office. Sessions are held via a secure telehealth platform, and testing materials are administered digitally. If you later decide to pursue a full evaluation, in-person testing at our Santa Monica office is also an option.
What happens during the Mini ADHD Assessment?
5
The process has three steps. First, you schedule and attend a free 15-minute consultation call with your psychologist to discuss your concerns and confirm the mini assessment is the right fit for you. Second, you complete a virtual session that includes a shortened clinical interview and standardized ADHD symptom measures. Third, you receive a brief written report summarizing your results along with the psychologist's clinical impressions and recommended next steps — whether that is a formal diagnosis, further comprehensive testing, or other supports.
Can a Mini ADHD Assessment be used to get accommodations at school or work?
6
No. The Mini ADHD Assessment is a clinical screening tool — it is not designed to produce the level of documentation required by schools, universities, standardized testing boards, or employers. Accommodation requests typically require a comprehensive written report that includes standardized testing data, a full differential diagnosis, and specific documentation of functional impairment. If you need accommodations for the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, college disability services, or workplace ADA requests, a full ADHD evaluation is necessary. We can help you transition to a full evaluation if the mini assessment confirms ADHD symptoms are present.
Does a Mini ADHD Assessment result in an official ADHD diagnosis?
7
The Mini ADHD Assessment provides a clinical impression — a professional opinion about whether your symptoms are consistent with ADHD — but it is not equivalent to a full diagnostic evaluation. Some providers and prescribers may accept this level of assessment to guide initial treatment discussions, particularly in straightforward cases. However, an official diagnosis for the purpose of academic accommodations, legal documentation, or complex clinical situations requires a comprehensive evaluation. Your psychologist will be transparent about what the mini assessment can and cannot establish in your specific case.
How much does a Mini ADHD Assessment cost?
8
The Mini ADHD Assessment is priced as a more affordable entry point compared to a full evaluation. Exact fees are discussed during your free 15-minute consultation call, where you will receive a clear breakdown of cost and timeline before committing to anything. Typical cost ranges from $1200 to $1325. Grey Matter Psychological Assessment is a private pay practice; we do not bill insurance directly but can provide a superbill for PPO reimbursement. Payment plans are available.
What if my Mini ADHD Assessment suggests I do have ADHD — what happens next?
9
If your results indicate that ADHD symptoms are present, your psychologist will outline your recommended next steps during the feedback portion of the assessment. Depending on your goals, that might mean proceeding to a full comprehensive evaluation for formal documentation and accommodations, consulting with a psychiatrist or physician about treatment options, or accessing targeted executive functioning support and strategies. You will not leave without a clear sense of direction.
What if my results suggest something other than ADHD?
10
ADHD symptoms overlap significantly with anxiety, depression, trauma responses, and other conditions — which is part of why professional evaluation matters. If your Mini ADHD Assessment suggests your difficulties may be better explained by another condition, your psychologist will discuss what they observed and what type of follow-up evaluation might be most helpful. At Grey Matter, we also assess for learning disorders, anxiety, and autism, and can guide you toward the right level of evaluation for your specific presentation.
