Frequently Asked Questions
Forensic evaluations
What is a forensic evaluation?
A forensic evaluation is provided by a specially-trained psychologist. This licensed psychologist performs a psychological evaluation and then provides a professional opinion about an individual involved in the legal system. The evaluations include a review of psychological and legal records, a thorough interview with the individual, and assessment tools— all of which are used to inform the psychologist’s opinion.
When is a forensic evaluation needed?
We are most often hired by legal teams in order to provide a professional opinion based on our expertise of trauma and our extensive training in forensic assessment. Forensic psychologists are asked to provide evaluations in Mental Competency, Criminal Responsibility, and Malingering Evaluations, among other things. You can see a full list of our services here.
What’s included in the testing/evaluation?
Each forensic evaluation is customized based on the questions that need to be answered by the legal team. All evaluations typically begin with an extensive interview, review of legal and medical records, and psychological assessment tools. Before the evaluation begins, our psychologists will learn about the needs of the legal team to create a customized evaluation.
How do we incorporate a trauma-informed perspective in our evaluations?
Each of our psychologists has over 14 years in providing in-depth mental health care for trauma survivors. You can explore more about our therapy support services here. We take our extensive understanding of how trauma impacts thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and self-understanding into our forensic evaluations to create a well-rounded and holistic view of the individual.
What can I expect when communicating with my forensic psychologist?
You can expect professional and consistent communication with your forensic psychologist. The evaluator will be in frequent contact with your legal team, thoroughly reviewing the materials provided, and providing an unbiased opinion.

neuropsychological evaluations
How can ADHD testing help me?
ADHD diagnosis requires testing in order to get accommodations with your school or work. Even if you’ve been diagnosed with ADHD by a physician, most Disability offices/departments will not accept a simple diagnosis. They require the approved testing in order to make accommodations. We provide this testing from start to finish. At the end of your testing experience, you’ll have a verified diagnosis, a written report, and extensive recommendations for treatment, support, and accommodations.
What makes Grey Matter different?
We pair our combined decades of experience with the warmth of a therapist. We aren’t just testing psychologists. We are also clinical psychologists that sit with the most traumatized folks in our community on a daily basis. We deeply believe that compassion and curiosity are the secret sauce for any clinical or diagnostic experience. Our commitment to you: help you feel comfortable throughout the testing experience. We want you to thrive and assessments are a great way to start your thriving process.
What’s included in the testing?
Our testing packages are customized and include everything. All clinical interviews, testing, and reports are included in the cost you are quoted during your consultation.
What are my options if I don’t want to get tested?
Neurofeedback is a great option for anyone that doesn’t need or want testing. We want to make our lives a little easier with less appointments to keep up with and less demand on our lives. So we’ve created a rental option for neurofeedback— where you can rent these professional-grade and easy-to-use systems to use from the comfort of your home. Reach out to us today to get started with neurofeedback at home. It’s helpful for issues with focus, attention, motivation, emotional regulation, and other health issues.
What other options do I have for more support?
We also have Executive Functioning Coaching for ADHD. Maybe you already know your diagnosis or feel pretty sure that you struggle with focus and attention enough that you need specific coaching to work through it. We have Executive Functioning Coaching just for you! Reach out for a consultation to discuss our coaching options for you.
Do you have reduced-cost options?
We do three things to make assessments more affordable for all. One: We are the most cost-effective ADHD testing in Los Angeles and we plan to stay that way. Two: We offer mini-assessments as a first step to help you decide if you’d like the more comprehensive tests. Need a mini-assessment that’s not ADHD-focused? We can help. Just reach out. Three: We do offer case-by-case sliding scale fees for those that demonstrate financial need. Book a consultation and we can discuss options.
How much time will the testing take?
It depends (such a psychologist's answer). Our mini-assessments take about an hour and you’ll have results in about a week. Our full and comprehensive testing usually takes 2 separate testing sessions, which can each last about 4-6 hours. Then it takes us a few weeks to look at the results and write those up in a helpful report for you. Overall, we aim for a 4-6 week turnaround from start to finish. Need a report sooner? Book a consultation and we can try to accommodate your needs.
Do you only do ADHD testing?
Heck no. We do neuropsychological, clinical, and forensic assessments. Need more details on whether we can help you? Email us and we can talk about options.
