Adoption means you are ready to expand your family! This is incredible news and we’d love to support your journey. As you step into this process, you might learn that adoption and family planning can be complicated. Did you know that most adoption agencies require a full psychological evaluation for both prospective parents? These reports are meant to measure a few important factors that help agencies ensure they are going to great families (that’s you!).
When you’re ready to expand your family through adoption, a comprehensive pre-adoption psychological evaluation will help you take the next big step in your parenthood journey.
Why is an evaluation necessary?
Most agencies require an evaluation to better understand personality, emotional intelligence, parenting style and approach to conflict and stress. We achieve this with an interview with each of the partners in the couple and then giving computerized personality assessments. Each agency has different requirements, all of which will be negotiated with your psychologist and agency before the scheduled evaluation. You will be supported every step of the way throughout the evaluation with a warm and supportive psychologist.
This process takes several hours to complete but we aim to make it as quick and supportive as possible.
Who can complete these evaluations?
These evaluations can only be completed by a licensed psychologist that is trained in personality and cognitive assessment and testing. This is a subspecialty within the psychology world and you definitely don’t want to leave this task to an untrained person. After the evaluations are completed, we will provide a report to your adoption agency, which they will discuss with you throughout the process.
